8 Most Comfortable Futons of 2023

We may earn commission from links on this page, but we only recommend products we love. Promise.

It's a couch! It's a bed! It's an essential piece of furniture!

Since we have you here today, one can only assume you're on the hunt for the perfect futon. And likely, not one that looks like it was acquired from the common room in a frat house.

There's something quite beautiful about couches that fold out to be beds. Like, how lucky are we that these even exist? I mean, c'mon, who isn't impressed by the ol' unexpected 2-in-1 situation? And because they're such a precious furniture piece, we should acknowledge that they *don't* have to be dull, gross looking, or cause major aches and pains the morning after sleeping on one.

I know. The phrase "comfortable futon" may sound like an oxymoron, but stick with us, because they're an entire reality. As a matter of fact, the futon game has been leveled all the way up recently, in regards to both style and comfort. All in all, the next time your distant cousin, roommate's bestie, or any lurking stray needs a place to crash, they'll sleep so well that they'll probably never want to leave! So, apologies in advance to all of you who are pretty strict about people overstaying their welcome—the futons we found below are just that cozy.

There's a snug and chic couch-bed hybrid waiting for you here, whether you desire everyday use or the occasional fold out once in a blue moon. Take your pick!

As modern as this sofa's design looks already, it gets better. Nobody likes wrestling with cords and charges behind/around their furniture, right? Right. That's why Serta eliminated that nuisance entirely with a built-in port. They're living in 3008.

Review Highlight: "At first impression I really thought it was click bait. The price and quality. [...] built-in charging ports, outlets. This was a bang for my buck. I got two of them. Comfortable! I will be shopping with you again. Shipping came earlier than expected, that was a bonus."

Velvet just communicates ~elegance~ in any space it enters. It's like if film noir had a designated fabric. With that in mind, you might want to pour over this futon's multiple velvet color options. They're grand.

Review Highlight: Assembly process was easy enough to do by myself. The instructions could cover a few more things, but it came together nicely regardless. I love the color, the photos represent the color of the fabric well.

No space? No problem. This cutesy little guy folds right up into the most unassuming corner couch. Folding it out into its full bed setup will look like a magic trick to any patient observers.

Review Highlight: "This is the most comfortable small convertible sleeper sofa that we have found. It was a bit harder to put together than we thought it would be but once together it's been great".

This one is already sleep-worthy enough when it's in couch form, TBH. The backrests actually recline, so congrats on identifying the future location for all of your pending TV binges.

Review Highlight: I love it! The couch did not come with instructions, but we figured it out! I have 2 kids and I thought it was going to get dirty so fast but guys!!! It’s so easy to clean!! I spray it down with water and use a towel to scrub it a bit and it comes right off. My daughter had a cut and was dripping blood a bit (she’s okay now), and she got it on the couch. I was scared that it would stain it, but it didn’t!! I’m happy with my purchase!

Okay, okay. Is this technically a futon? Not exactly. But! It *is* a piece of sturdy, additional seating that also moonlights as a functional sleeping situation. I mean, when it folds out into a queen sized bed, you can really stretch out and relax. Plus, it'd be such a chic accent piece.

Review Highlight: "A great daybed…. Easy to assemble without help due to good, clear instructions. Great, soft plush fabric and color true to sales photos. All in all very pleased with my purchase."

I know it may feel a bit out there to call a futon "fierce," but there's no word better suited. Its quirky design will spruce up any room you're in.

Review Highlight: This is definitely an acceptable choice for a primary bed, I am coming from a tempurpedic and can say that I have no problems sleeping at night. I have tried out several couch bed solutions, and have found this to be the only adequate option.

Oh, hello, subtle chevron! The stitched pattern on this will add such fun texture to your room. Pair it with some funky throw pillows and you've got yourself a statement piece, baby.

Review Highlight: "Easy assembly, it’s been pretty comfortable so far, and I slept on it the first night since it was the first piece of furniture I could assemble. A bit firm so don’t expect the softest sofa but for this price I’m more than happy with this purchase! And I absolutely love the color, it makes my place stand out a bit more."

So now get into this linen! This gorgeous sofa is made for lounging, sitting, and yes, catching some Zzz's. And with its cooling fabric upholstery, all three will be more than satisfying.

Review Highlight: "I am a big fan and follower of the Novogratz line and have been glancing at this couch idly for a few years now. Finally when I moved I needed a sleeper sofa for occasional guests in my new place and decided to go for it. The price does reflect the overall quality, but the materials of the upholstery and legs are very nice. It really is the size of a twin bed and can fit even a tall adult comfortably".

Despite their reputation as "every now and again" crash pads, you can definitely sleep on a futon mattress just as often as you would any other bed. Especially if it's a good quality pick like the ones up above. If you find that the cushioning just doesn't feel plush enough for your daily liking, we suggest purchasing an affordable mattress pad to place on top for a bit of extra padding.

We know that you deserve a good night's rest. Therefore, we jumped into reviews—both disparaging and glowing—to gather intel on which top sellers are actually worth your hard earned cash. From there, we prioritized range (budget and style-wise) to ensure our top futon picks fell across the spectrum of prices and aesthetics. If you want something that fits seamlessly into your space, you've got it right here.
